Biodiesel IS a good alternative diesel fuel. It can be
used in virtually any diesel engine if kept at reasonable
ratios, B5 and B20 as per most manufacturers
recommendations. While many new diesel engines ARE approved
for use of biodiesel in B5 and B20 (5-20% bio with 95-80%
petrol diesel), it is also true that these manufacturer
allowances are for REFINERY made biodiesel ONLY. Since a car
manufacturer cannot possibly verify the quality of a
homemade fuel used in their cars, they limit their
endorsement of such fuels to those made at EPA regulated
refineries.
Biodiesel is corrosive and tends to clean out the fuel
systems and tanks of old residual parrafin from years of
petrol diesel usage. While this is good once the system is
cleaned, it can lead to a great deal of lossened parrafin
and clogged filters in the short run. This corrosive
nature of biodiesel also makes it highly likely that seals
and gaskets in a fuel system will swell up and possibly
leak. While newer engines will tend to be equipped with
resistant Viton seals to prevent this swelling, they are
once again only approved by manufacturers at ratios of B5
or B20.
